Novartis Animal Health, a division of Novartis International, is responsible for the research, development and commercialization of leading animal treatments that meet the needs of pet owners, farmers and veterinarians. Headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, and present in over 40 countries, Novartis Animal Health employs more than 2,600 people worldwide.

With such a global presence and an ever changing product line, Novartis’ Education department, responsible for its Animal Health division, faced many challenges in keeping product distributors up-to-date and compliant. Novartis sought to diminish the burden of work on instructors of its in-person training and ensure consistency in training of its geographically dispersed and multi-faceted sales force. br>
Research conducted by the organization’s Training Manager concluded that an online learning management system and shift towards online learning presented an opportunity to decrease training costs, streamline training and rapidly produce, deliver and manage new educational programs.

With more than a dozen third-party organizations representing the treatments developed by Novartis Animal Health, educating distributors of their products on the very latest in research and development of vaccines and pharmaceuticals for animal health would need to be efficient for Novartis’ staff yet conceivably customized to its distributors.

THE SOLUTION

Digitec met the needs of Novartis Animal Health through its ability to provide a complete learning management system (LMS) for creating, delivering, managing, monitoring, tracking and reporting on learners within the system. The Knowledge Direct® LMS was also configured to allow for co-branded portal sites which represent Novartis’ distributor companies.

Automated features within the system include triggered reporting of learner activity at pre-determined intervals with email notifications sent to the LMS administrator. In addition, learners can self-register, so that Novartis’ busy education department can focus their time and talents on creating new course content.

Knowledge Direct’s built-in rapid content authoring tool and assessment engine allow instructional designers and content authors to quickly and easily create learning objects. Once created, the courses are easily distributed to Novartis’ various, tailored eLearning portals and assigned to learner types.

Learner authentication within the system at the time of registration helps identify and confirm which company the learner is employed by and ultimately which portal site to allow access to. This feature provides an additional layer of security for Novartis’ proprietary research information and product details.

THE RESULT

By utilizing Digitec’s Knowledge Direct MED LMS, Novartis is able to:

• Provide customized training portals to its external audience of product distributors.

• Reduce training costs related to instructor-led training.

• Quickly and easily create new course content and assessments.

• Gauge learner performance and compare test results to product sales.

• Ensure consistency in product training across companies and locations.

• Receive customized learner reports via email, automatically at the first of each month. • Enable learners to self-register, eliminating the need for manual data entry.

• Protect proprietary data and authenticate learners.
